Tank crusader

Design and development
In 1938, Nuffield Mechanizations and Aero Limited produced their A16 design for a heavy cruiser tank based on Christie suspension. Looking for a lighter and cheaper tank to build, the General Staff requested alternatives. To this end, the A13 Mk III cruiser tank, which would enter service as the «Tank, Cruiser Mk V» (and known in service as «Covenanter»), was designed. Nuffield was, in 1939, offered the opportunity to take part in the production of the Covenanter.
Nuffield, however, preferred to work on its own version of the A13—though it still provided design work for the Covenanter’s turret. This new tank was adopted as «Tank, Cruiser, Mk VI Crusader», under General Staff specification A15. Although Crusader is often referred to as an improved version of the Covenanter, in fact it was a parallel design. Both tanks were ordered «off the drawing board» without building prototypes first. Despite a later start, the pilot model of the Crusader was ready six weeks before the first Covenanter.
Unlike earlier «Christie cruisers» (A13, Marks III and IV and the Mark V Covenanter) that were built with four road wheels, Crusader had five road wheels each side to improve weight distribution in a tank that weighed almost 20 tons instead of the 14 tons of the previous cruisers. The 32 in (810 mm)-diameter wheels were of pressed steel with solid rubber tyres. The hull sides were built up of two separated plates, with the suspension arms between them.
It had a different engine from the Covenanter, different steering system and a conventional cooling system with radiators in the engine compartment. Covenanter used a brand new engine design, whereas Crusader adapted the readily available Liberty engine to fit into a lower profile engine compartment. At the left side of the front hull—a place occupied by the engine radiator in the Covenanter—was mounted a small hand-traversed auxiliary turret armed with a Besa machine gun. The auxiliary turret was awkward to use and was often removed in the field or remained unoccupied.
Both the A13 Mk III Covenanter and the A15 Crusader designs used the same main turret. The turret was polygonal—with sides that sloped out then in again—to give maximum space on the limited turret ring diameter. Early production vehicles had a «semi-internal» cast gun mantlet, which was quickly replaced in production by a better protected larger cast mantlet with three vertical slits for the main gun, a coaxial Besa machine gun and for the sighting telescope. There was no cupola for the commander who instead had a flat hatch with the periscope mounted through it.
The main armament, as in other British tanks of the period, was balanced so that the gunner could control its elevation through a padded shaft against his right shoulder rather than using a geared mechanism. This fitted well with the British doctrine of firing accurately on the move.
When it was understood that there would be delays in the introduction of successor heavy cruiser tanks (the Cavalier, Centaur and Cromwell), the Crusader was adapted with a six-pounder gun.
Историческая справка
Crusader 5.5-in.

Usage in battles
The Crusader Mk II is a quite effective low-range light tank, it is equipped with a fast firing 40 mm cannon, which is excellent at taking out tanks with a cramped interior and the crew close to each other, very fast reload, gun stabilization and its good handling makes up for shell doing not so much damage because of lack of the good explosive filler compared to other tanks in its battle rating range and even the last unlockable shell can take out enemy tanks so easily.
Since it is a light tank it does not have so much armour, driving and fighting in the open field should be avoided whatever it is possible, unless there is enough of cover or the terrain shaped in a way so it is possible to use the hull down tactics at which this tank excels, because of its very low profile, excellent gun elevation and the turret shape which makes it hard to hit.
The combination of manoeuvrability, quite high speed and good acceleration makes it good at flanking and rushing the enemy positions, max speed could seem to be inferior to other light tanks and make think that it is not a good tank, but it is compensated by its acceleration, it can get to the high speed very fast and the turning ability is very good at any speed, except for moving in the same place, tank is also very stable and pleasant to drive.
Any frontal engagement with enemy SPAAG units should be avoided, it can work only at long distance and when flanking them. Dealing with other light tanks should not be an issue, the 40 mm cannon lacks in accuracy but the reload speed if fast and hitting the target should not be an issue at the close distance. Fighting against the medium tanks and other bigger vehicles could be a problem, against them is always required to know the crew position in the enemy tank and aim for them and since all available shells do not a lot of damage in most cases only one crew member will be falling unconscious, this means destroying the medium tank can take a lot of time and make you and your position exposed to the enemy team, long range engagements against them should be avoided.

Player Opinion
Pros and Cons
Cons:
- Bad armor
- Very weak damage for best gun
- low penetration for all guns
- Very weak howitzer
Performance
This tank is fast, with a high DPM on the 6 and 2 pounder guns, but it has bad armor, and about 96 damage per-shot, so don’t go fighting heavy, or even some medium tanks. as being the only tier 5 light tank, it suffers severely. Also, it is relatively fast for its tier so tank destroyers are an easy target if you can get around them without getting shot. The best way to view your roll in battle is to try to become a mobile assassin. The key to light tanks is that there is no reduction in their ability to be spotted when they are on the move. If you position your tank behind a bush and you are not spotted by the enemy, this fact will remain even if you keep the tank rolling back and forth. Remember; when the spotting lightbulb comes on, you already have appeared on the enemy’s screen. Keep your tank moving. If you sit still and are spotted, it will be easier to target you in those few seconds before you are warned—it is better to always be in motion if you wish to play light tanks well. Conserve your hit points and try to spot for your team in the early moments of the game, keep moving and always watch your mini-map. As the game develops seek out distracted enemy tanks and exploit your roll as the mobile assassin to punish the enemy for not keeping track of your positon. If you take your time and learn how to perform well in a light tank in this mid-tier tank, you will be able to truly turn the tide of battle in the upper tier light tanks. Study the view ranges of every tank you will face in the game, learn how to back up when you are spotted, or always stay on the edges of a tank’s spotting range and you often will deal damage to tanks that have no idea where you are on the map.
Early Research
- Prioritise geting mk.3 turret and 6 pounder gun
- Buy tracks before new engine.
- Do not buy 3-in Howitzer, as it is very weak.
Historical Info
Designed as the cruiser mk.IV using the Christie suspension, but had 5 wheels on each side instead of 4. It was born form the failure of the Covenanter and used a a better engine and running gear, with new 6 pounder gun, and was a very important tank of the desert wars of 1941-42. but was put out of production
in late 1941, because its thin armor and 6 pounder gun where completely inadequate when fighting later models of the Panzer IV and Tiger. The crusader lived on as a gun carriage, a repair tractor, AA vehicle etc.

Concurrent with the Mark V Covenanter
The Cruiser Mark V was better known as the “Covenanter” or, officially, the A13 Mk.III. After it, all Cruiser names started with a “C”. This tradition has carried on into the Cold War British MBTs. It was basically a better armored and designed version of the previous Mk.IV, featuring a new hull, improved Christie style suspensions, a Meadows DAV flat-12 giving 340 bhp and Meadows gearbox with Wilson epicyclic steering. Above all, it had better overall protection, with increased armor thickness and a new turret design, very low, sloped and angular, built by Nuffield, which became a characteristic of the following tanks. Despite all these improvements, the Covenanter design incorporated a major flaw in engine ventilation. Consequently, it was never deployed in the desert, but served in the British Isles until 1943, as a training tank and in home defense regiments. The Nuffield Company, which took part in the project, was already working on a modified A13 of its own.

Despite a later start, the pilot model of the Crusader was ready six weeks before the first Covenanter.
Unlike earlier «Christie cruisers»( A13, Marks III and IV and the Mark V Covenanter ) that were built with 4 road wheels, Crusader had five road wheels each side to improve weight distribution in a tank that weighed almost 20 tons instead of the 14 tons of the previous cruisers. The 32 in (810 mm)-diameter wheels were of pressed steel with solid rubber tyres. The auxiliary turret was awkward to use and was often removed in the field or remained unoccupied.
Both the A13 Mk III and the A15 designs used the same main turret. The turret was polygonal—with sides that sloped out then in again—to give maximum turret space on the limited turret diameter. Early production vehicles had a «semi-internal» cast gun mantlet, which was quickly replaced in production by a better protected big cast mantlet with three vertical slits—for the main gun, for a coaxial Besa machine gun and for the sighting telescope. There was no cupola for the commander who had instead a flat hatch with the periscope mounted through it. The main armament, as in other British tanks of the period, was balanced so the gunner could control its elevation through a padded shaft against his right shoulder rather than using a geared mechanism. This fitted well with the British doctrine of firing accurately on the move. When it was understood that there would be delays in the introduction of successor heavy cruiser tanks—what would become the Cavalier, Centaur and Cromwell—the Crusader was adapted to use the 6 pounder gun.
Operators
Commonwealth tank crews were equipped with Crusaders by 1941. These included the South Africans, New Zealanders and Australians. Other nationalities were also equipped in increasing quantities, as the Crusaders were replaced in British service, like some Free French and Dutch units. Some Mark I and IIs were captured by the Axis during Rommel’s advance, and both the Littorio Armored Division and German 15th Panzer Division used many captured models to compensate for their own losses. They appreciated their speed and relatively low profile in operations but were limited by the lack of spare parts. The Canadians, fighting in Italy, were also provided Crusader IIIs for their cavalry units. After the war, many were sold to the Argentinians, who converted them to motorized gun carriages, equipped with modern 75 and 105 mm (2.95 and 4.13 in) guns.
Usage in the battles
A Crusader MkIII heading to combat on Poland.
The Crusader tank was designed to be fast and highly mobile, exploiting enemy battle lines by penetrating the flanks and disrupting the enemy from behind. In the game, the Crusader should be used in a similar fashion. It is quick, well armed and highly manoeuvrable, making it great at rushing capture points and exploiting the enemies flanks. The 57mm gun is excellent for its tier, with high penetration and good ballistics. Very few tanks can withstand a hit from this gun without major damage or worse.
The tanks low profile is its main advantage. You can hide easily among vegetation and obstacles like walls, shooting from a concealed position or retreating if the situation is looking a little too dangerous.
Of course, you can’t have everything. The tank has thin armour, so it isn’t suitable as a front line tank. The armour is sloped, however, so you may bounce some smaller calibre shells. Explosive shells are your worst nightmare, so avoid getting hit by them.
The 57 mm gun has great penetration, but the Crusader has very thin armour. There are still plenty of enemies that can give you some trouble.
- T-34 (1940)- You will begin encountering early models of T34s at this tier. You can penetrate their turret easily and drivers port easily, but they can pose a serious problem when angled properly. Also, the 76mm L11 gun can easily take you out with its massive explosive power. Try to take out the gunner first and then deal with the rest of the crew members for a safe kill.
- Panzer IV F1- The rapid-fire 75mm short barreled gun can fire HEAT or APCBC rounds, which can penetrate and cause serious damage to the Crusader. Luckily, the F1 has flat armour which can be easily penetrated from the front. Range is your friend with these tanks. Their gun is very difficult to aim accurately over 500m. Hit it before it hits you and you will most likely come out on top.
- Panzer IV F2- If you get up-tiered then you will face off against the dreaded Panzer IV F2. Its gun is accurate, high penetration and causes massive damage upon penetration. It will kill you easily at range. Fortunately, it has the same weak flat armour as the F1, so can be easily dealt with if you get off the first shot
- KV1-L11 — These heavy tanks are rare at your battle rating, but can still be faced. They have great, bouncy armour and a deadly gun. Try to hit the turret cheeks or the side/rear armour.
- Pz.Kpfw. III Ausf. L — This Panzer III has a great, high-velocity gun and excellent frontal armour. The extra 20mm high hardness plates make a massive difference to the frontal armour, making it more bouncy and harder to penetrate. Fortunately, your gun can reliably penetrate the Panzer III L. If you are unsure, aim for the drivers port to kill the driver, gunner and commander.
Almost every tank can kill you easily, even with Rank I guns. Stay mobile, take advantage of the tanks low profile and shoot only when you know you can penetrate. This can make you a formidable tank on the battlefield.

Pros and cons
Pros:
- Good penetration for a Rank I light tank
- Diverse selection of shells
- Low profile
- Gun is very lethal at close/mid range. It can easily get through the armour of any vehicle at its rank and beyond
- Gun already has a quick fire rate and no loader, so if a crew member dies you cannot lose much of your fire rate advantage
- Makes a good sneaky flanker in later rank matches. The gun remains effective and your low profile can come in handy
- Armour is thin but has odd angles all over the place, causing some rounds to bounce
- Reverse speed is much better than the Cromwell tank, though still only average
- Good manoeuvrability
- Carries 50 smoke grenades, can lay down long smoke screens to cover large areas
Cons:
- Not as fast as some of the other light tanks at this rank
- Weak armour
- Face of the turret is flat, making it quite easy to kill the gunner
- Only 3 crew members, relatively easy to kill in one shot
