Development

After World War II, China stayed in a state of conflict as part of the Chinese Civil War, pitting the Chinese Nationalists against the Communists. The Communist Party were victorious and they established the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 01 October 1949. In 14 February 1950, the Chinese signed an alliance treaty with the Soviet Union, which allowed the Soviet Union to support China economically and militarily, leading to many money loans and arms trade. One of the weapons given in arms trade was the Soviet’s new main battle tank, the T-54. The tank became the basis of the Soviet’s aid in building up China’s tank manufacturing facility in 1956, starting with Soviet-made parts before transitioning to Chinese parts. The T-54 tank design was then accepted into the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in 1959 as the Type 59.

While accepted as the main tank of the PLA, the Type 59 was deemed too heavy for some of the terrain and infrastructure on China. A light tank design was requested in the late 1950s, leading to the formal development process in 1958. The first prototype was produced in 1960 as the Type 59-16, which was essentially a down-scaled Type 59 with an 85 mm armament, thinner armour, and smaller profile. Trials commenced until December 1962, when it was accepted as the Type 62, production name WZ 131. It was then put into production in 1963 with roughly 1,393 tank units produced until 1989.

Combat usage

The Type 62 light tank was primarily stationed with military units in Southern China where the infrastructure is not as sophisticated. However, the Type 62 would not see its first usage in Chinese hands. A number of them was supplied to the North Vietnamese Army during the Vietnam War, which they used against America and South Vietnam until the end of the war in 1975. The Type 62 then saw use again in 1979 in Vietnam, but mostly in Chinese hands in the Sino-Vietnamese War. However, the Type 62 suffered due to anti-tank weapons such as the ubiquitous rocket launchers penetrating right through the thin armour. The overall consensus of their experiences in Vietnam was that the Type 62 not suitable to act around as a normal tank due to its light armour and armament, and was relegated to recon and fire support.

An upgrade program commenced on the Type 62 led to the Type 62-I variant. The program was based on the experiences in Vietnam, leading to many upgrades such as a laser range finder, a shield for the exterior-mounted 12.7 mm machine gun, and protection against HEAT rounds. The second modernization program began in 2000 to upgrade the Type 62-I into Type 62G which improved the armour layout and turret design of the tank, as well as adding smoke dischargers and a new 105 mm main armament with a modern stabilizer and fire-control system. The Type 62 stayed in the Chinese service up until early 2013.

The Type 62 also saw exportation to many countries, ranging from Albania, Banglades, Cambodia, Congo, Mali, Sudan, Tanzania, Thailand, North Korea, and Zaire. In some cases, such as in North Korea, this led to confusions between the Soviet’s T-62 main battle tank due to the labeling of the Type 62 as simply «T-62». Information of the Type 62 in these countries are rather limited or unknown, though most of them seem to still have them in reserves today.

Description

The ▂Type 62 is a gift rank IV Soviet light tank
with a battle rating of 6.7 (AB/RB/SB). It was introduced during the 2016 «War Thunder Chronicle» that took place between 23 December 2016 to 16 January 2017. It was obtained via completing 10 tasks as part of the event and is no longer obtainable.

While playing the Type-62, it is important to stay hidden from your enemy at all times and avoid going head-to-head with enemies that have noticed your presence and are focusing on eliminating you. The paper-thin armour on the Type-62 cannot effectively stop any shell, and, unless you’re facing the British, a hit will likely result in the HE filler of the shell knocking out most of your crew / detonating your ammo racks. So it is recommended to use flanking tactics on larger maps, while staying hidden behind terrain features such as hills, trees, even in ditches, while on smaller city maps it’s recommended to stay behind piles of rubble, houses, even your teammates, to avoid the enemy seeing the Type-62 before it has the opportunity to disable their gun or destroy them.

В целом. Type 62 неоднозначный. Есть масса плюсов и масса минусов.
Из плюсов
Хороший обзор — около 300 метров (плюс/ минус зависит от амуниции).

Хорошая подвижность. Быстрый, динамичный, маневренный.

Орудие среднее — неплохая скорострельность, неплохой разовый урон. Пробитие среднее — для большинства целей хватает, но частенько нужно выцеливать и/ или заряжать голду. Есть что-то вроде УВН — хотелось бы больше, но больше чем у «совков».

Брони нет. Совсем (хотя в маске орудия что-то есть + гусеницы). Что-то рикошетит, но рикошеты получают даже Шпицы. У Тайпа обводы напоминают советские СТ — «облегченного» или Т-54. Первое время может показаться, что и у китайца есть чем танковать. Но максимальная толщина лба — 45 мм. Даже фугасы небольших калибров проходят на фулочку.
Касательно рикошетов. Вероятность рикошета — произведение угла наклона и толщина брони. Наклоны (округлость) башни есть, толщины нет. Результат — попадая на прицел противника нет смысла ромбовать или мансовать. Вероятность пробития 99.9%.

Фарм. Есть мнение — китаец не фармит. Но с этим можно поспорить. Может Супер Першинг или Лев фармят «уверенней», но в целом китаец не сильно уступает. По ощущениям — приносит серебра больше одноклассника Су-122-44, например.

Отличный светляк, тактика игры аналогична другим ЛТ’шкам.

Service History

Type 62 light tank officially entered production and service with the PLA in 1963. More than 1,393 vehicles were produced between 1963 and 1989 when it ended. The Type 62 was primarily deployed in Southern China, where it remains in active service to this day. The most famous unit to operate the Type 62 light tanks is the recon battalion directly attached to the 43rd Army Group HQ, Guangzhou MR.

It first saw combat during Vietnam War. The PRC supplied the Type 62 light tanks to the NVA before the invasion of Kampuchea. They were widely used by the Vietnam People’s Army in 1960s and 1970s and took part in the Ho Chi Minh Campaign in 1975. In 1979 it again saw combat in Vietnam but during the Sino–Vietnamese War. PLA used about two hundred tanks in Vietnam during this conflict and most of these were Type 62 light tanks. They suffered severe losses in combat due to tank’s poor protection as the tank’s thin armour could be easily penetrated by hand-held rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) launchers. An upgrade package was developed for the Type 62 soon after the war and was designated Type 62-I. Based on the improvement programs after the Sino–Vietnamese War the Type 62 was found to be too lightly armoured and too poorly armed to be used as a normal tank. Of the two hundred tanks which invaded Vietnam about half were knocked out, underscoring the Type 62’s lack of armour and armament. Since then the Type 62 has been shifted to secondary duties in Southern China, such as reconnaissance, fire support and combat with enemy lightly armoured vehicles.

Most of 400 Type 62 light tanks which are now in service with PLA Ground Forces have been upgraded to Type 62-I and Type 62G standard. The upgrading to Type 62-I standard started in 1979 and upgrading to Type 62G standard started in 2000. It is unknown exactly how many Type 62 light tanks were upgraded or what units operate the upgraded variants but in January 2005 CCTV showed two Type 62G light tanks belonging to an artillery regiment, Guangzhou MR and the tanks are serving as the recon coy of this regiment. There aren’t any indications that suggest retirement of the Type 62 light tank from the Chinese military in the near future.

The Type 62 has also been exported widely. Foreign nations which field, or have fielded, the Type 62 include North Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of the Congo, Mali, Albania and Sudan. There is a lot of confusion concerning the North Korean Ch’ŏnma-ho main battle tank which is sometimes considered to be an upgrade of Type 62 light tank. This is incorrect as the Ch’ŏnma-ho main battle tank is based on the Soviet T-62 main battle tank. This originated from the fact that many times tanks like Type 59 and Type 62 are listed as T-59 and T-62. This leads to many confusions which in turn lead to, for example, listing the Albania as T-62 main battle tank operator and calling the Ch’ŏnma-ho main battle tank an upgrade of Type 62 light tank. Its not clear which nations still have them in service, although based on available knowledge it seems that all original users still have it either on active or reserve status except for North Korea which didn’t have them in service as of 1995.

People’s Republic of China

• Type 59-16 — Prototype of Type 62.
• Type 62 — Scaled down, lightly armed and thinly armoured variant of the Type 59. It is also known under its industrial designation, WZ132.
• Type 62-I — Type 62 upgrade designed basing on the experience gathered during the Sino-Vietnamese War. It features 33 different improvements including an external double lens laser range finder mounted above the mantlet of the 85 mm Type 62-85TC rifled main gun for better firing accuracy and a shield for the 12.7 mm Type 54 anti-aircraft heavy machine gun. It is also known under its industrial designation, WZ132-1.
• Type 62-I fitted with external turret storage racks and hull sideskirts for additional protection against HEAT projectiles and anti-tank missiles. It is a late model.
• Type 62G (G stands for Gai — «Improved») — Most recent Type 62 light tank upgrade with improved armour layout and original cast turret replaced by a new welded flat-plate turret which also incorporates an improved armour layout as well as four smoke grenade dischargers on each side of the turret. It is armed with a more powerful 105 mm rifled main gun with fume extractor in center of barrel, vertical stabilization system, primitive fire-control system, and night vision equipment. Adopted by Pakistan in Al-Zarrar and Al-Khalid tank.
• Type 70 — Rebuild Type 62 and like the Type 62-I it is fitted with an external double lens laser range finder mounted above the mantlet of the 85 mm Type 62-85TC rifled main gun but without the shield around the AA HMG. It also has improved sights and a gun stabilization system.
• Type 79 — Experimental armoured recovery vehicle based on Type 62 light tank.
• GJT 211 — Armoured bulldozer based on Type 62 light tank chassis.
• GSL 131 — Mine clearing variant of the GSL 211. It is also known as Type 82.

Usage in battles

With it’s excellent mobility, the Type-62 is great for getting from point to point and setting up ambushes. However it is important to note that the reload rate is around the same or even slower than most enemy tanks, so making your first shot count is always going to determine whether you survive the engagement or not. Aiming for the turret or ammo racks of the enemy are great options, as they usually ensure ammo rack detonations or that the enemy won’t be able to fire back at you if not.

Also note that going on rough terrain and over piles of rubble is not recommended while at risk to be shot at by the enemy, as the gun takes a very long time to adjust in the vertical. With the the HEAT-FS shell, staying at range is also possible, as it is much easier for you to hide your tank from the enemy while not losing accuracy and penetration of the HEAT-FS shell.

When facing heavy and medium tanks of the enemy, try to knock out their gun to allow you to get a clear shot of their side, as the stock shells for the 85mm gun on the Type-62 can’t reliably penetrate tanks such as the T29 and Tiger II (H) up front. However, with the HEAT-FS and APCR shells unlocked you’ll be able to deal with heavily armoured tanks easier, so getting those early on is a must.

The hardest tanks to destroy in the Type-62 will be the T29 and Tiger II (H), as APHEBC and APCBC shells cannot penetrate these tanks from the front. When facing against these tanks, your best option is to get their ammo racks or turret crew from the side while they’re busy dealing with your teammates, or, if they see you, relocating without them seeing you and getting them unawares. With the HEAT-FS shell it is possible to even penetrate the King Tiger’s upper front plate if they underestimate you and don’t angle their hull.

Pros and cons

• 85 mm is similar to the one on T-44, with access to superior shells
• Access to 3BK2 HEATFS round, capable of penetrating 300 mm of armour
• Pintle-mounted 12.7 mm MG can provide AA defenses
• Decent ammo reserve for its size, 47 shells
• Looks like a T-54, can maybe cause opponents in RB and SB to take a pause to figure out what you really are

Cons:

• Very thin armour — 35mm hull in front, 50mm turret front armour
• Slow turret traverse
• Rather long reload
• Cramped crew and scattered ammo all over ensures easy knock-outs if penetrated
