Combat History

The T-28 was deployed during the Invasion of Poland and the Winter War against Finland. During the initial stages of the Winter War, the tank was used in direct fire missions against Finnish pillboxes. In the course of these operations, it was found that the armour was inadequate and programs were initiated to upgrade it. Frontal plates were upgraded from 50 mm to 80 mm and side and rear plates to 40 mm thickness. With this up-armoured version the Red Army broke through the main Finnish defensive fortification, the Mannerheim Line.
According to Russian historian M. Kolomietz’s book «T-28. Three-headed Stalin’s Monster», over 200 T-28s were knocked out during the Winter War, but only 20 of them were in irrecoverable losses (including 2 captured by the Finnish Army). Due to proximity of the Kirov Plant, all other knocked-out tanks were repaired, some of them over five times.

The Finns knew the T-28 as the Postivaunu («mail wagon» or stagecoach), a name which alluded to Finnish troops’ discovery of Red Army field mail sacks inside the first destroyed T-28. Another explanation is that the high profile of the tank resembled the old west stagecoaches of the United States. Finns captured two T-28s during the Winter War and five in Continuation War, for a total of 7 vehicles.

The Soviets had 411 T-28 tanks when the Germans invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941. Most T-28s were lost during the first two months of the invasion, many of them abandoned after mechanical breakdown. Some T-28s took part in the 1941 winter defence of Leningrad and Moscow, but after late 1941, they were rare in Red Army service; a few were operated by enemy forces.

Навесное оборудование

Гидравлическая система и ВОМ делают трактор Т-28 универсальной машиной. С помощью широкого спектра навесного оборудования трактор может облегчить труд фермеров на крупных и малых фермерских хозяйствах.

Usage in battles

The powerful, yet accurate gun, paired with thin armour and a large profile makes the T-28 look ideal for long-range encounters, yet its low penetration, slow shell velocity and no real gun depression to exploit terrain discourages this kind of gameplay. However, due to the crew/equipment spacing that helps soak damage and keep it fighting, its highly versatile and powerful main gun make this tank quite capable in close range encounters. Hit & run tactics work pretty well (if the «run» aspect of it is ever needed).

If against a larger or more powerful tank, the T-28 will often be forced to stay and fight, as the large profile of the tank makes it easy to hit while retreating. Use the gun’s accuracy to an advantage. Aim for weak points like the driver’s hatch or gunner’s port. If unable to shoot against such a small target, attempt to cripple the tank’s offensive armament to take some pressure off.

Avoid T-34s, especially the later modifications. Their APHE ammo is devastatingly explosive, especially against such a large easy-to-hit tank with no real armour like the T-28. One shot almost anywhere into the tank and that’s the end. At the same time, the T-34’s own armour is basically invulnerable to the T-28 shells, except when on their sides, where the 76 mm can penetrate the turret, and possibly the side hull armour (Only with AP ammo). Keep in mind that T-34s can turn both their hull and turret very fast, so if the first shot misses, there won’t be another chance.

Light tanks that can flank around the side or back of the T-28 can prove catastrophic as well.

Pros and cons

Pros:

• The cannon is accurate and is able to do large amounts of damage on penetration
• Crew of six
• Fast and versatile for such a big medium tank
• Machine gun turrets and complicated multi-layer side armour often absorb projectiles
• It has Shrapnel as standard ammunition, which is effective against light tanks and AA vehicles
• Total of 3 machine guns can make short work of any unarmoured AA vehicles

Cons:

• Large silhouette
• Generally thin armour
• Slow reload time
• Poor gun depression
• Bad penetration with all types of ammo

Экранирование

Применение танков Т-28 в Зимней войне выявило недостаточность их бронирования, в результате чего была разработана схема дополнительного экранирования танка. Танки экранировались в заводских условиях методом приваривания дополнительных бронелистов толщиной 20—30 мм к корпусу танка и башням. Экранирование позволило довести толщину брони лобовых частей корпуса танка до 50—60 мм, а башен и верхней части бортов — до 40 мм. Это серьёзно повысило защищённость машины, хотя и отрицательно сказалось на её динамических характеристиках, поскольку масса танка возросла до 32 тонн. Экранирование танков производилось на Кировском заводе в 1940 году. Экранированные танки получали индекс Т-28Э («экранированный»). Планировалось произвести экранирование всех имевшихся в наличии машин (свыше 400), но, согласно документам, всего было заэкранировано 111 танков, из них 103 — полностью и 8 — частично. Большинство экранированных машин поступало в части Ленинградского военного округа (около 80 %), 15 % машин — в Киевский ОВО, и лишь две машины — в Западный ОВО.

Вооружение

85-мм пушка Ф-30 — разработана под руководством Грабина в начале 1939 года как танковое орудие большой мощности. В начале лета 1939 года образец орудия проходил испытания возкой и на искусственном откате на танке Т-28 (орудие устанавливалось в башню). Испытания стрельбой было решено не проводить, поскольку при использовании орудия расчётная реакция отдачи на погон превышала допустимую.

Main armament

Main article: L-10 (76 mm)

The 76 mm L-10 gun offers a reasonable penetration power at its battle rating. Its low muzzle velocity allows for a curved firing trajectory, ideal for firing at targets behind cover. However, it makes it hard to anticipate the path of moving targets. Because of the shortness of the gun, accuracy drop is noticeable from 700m distance and a handicap over 1000m.
The rotation speed of the gun is decent compared to other tanks at the same rank or battle rating.
The elevation angle is average. The depression angle is not big enough for you to fire from cover but it is better than no depression as it is a rare feature on Soviet vehicles.
Your recoil is barely noticeable due to your short gun and the overall weight of the tank. The targeting procedure is quick together with a short reload time.

Ammunition

The three available shells for the T-28 are very efficient for causing crew depletion. Each shell is suited for a specific type of opponent:

• Use the BR-350A (with MD-5 fuze) when facing enemy armoured targets (medium/heavy tanks). Its penetration power will force you to play at close or middle range (between 500m and 1 km max) from your target. However, the post-penetration damage is very important and will almost guarantee instant kills with just 1 shell.
• The Sh-354T is most suited for lightly armoured targets (light tanks, armored cars, planes) thanks to the increased spallation.
• The OF-350M is best to use against open-top vehicles (SPG with only a gun shield, platform trucks, SPAAs, etc.) because of the blast effect.

• Ammo racks are listed by order of depletion: n°1 is emptied first, then n°2, etc.
• Let’s consider ammo rack n°1: 64 (+5). If you want the 1st rack to be empty, pack 64 shells in the battle menu. (+5) is the number of unused shells.

The proposed tank was a low silhouette vehicle without a turret. The 105mm gun T5E1 was to be mounted in the front of the hull with a traverse of 10 degrees to the right and left of center and an elevation range of -5 to +20 degrees.

The power package in the T28 (T95) was essentially the same as in the M26 Pershing tank, although the weight of the new vehicle was more than twice that of the latter. To handle the T28 (T95), the 500 horsepower Ford GAF engine and the torqmatic transmission required a final drive gear ratio that reduced the maximum vehicle speed to about eight miles per hour. In fact, the maximum recommended sustained speed was seven miles per hour at 2600 rpm. Due to its extreme weight and low engine power, the T28 (T95) had extremely limited obstacle-crossing ability and could not cross any of the portable bridges available at the time. The great weight of the vehicle also required considerable ingenuity in design to reduce the ground pressure to an acceptable level. This objective was achieved by the use of two sets of tracks on each side. The outer set, along with the four inch thick armor side skirts, could be removed and towed behind the vehicle when operating on a hard surface. Removing the outer tracks also reduced the overall width from 179 1/2 inches to 124 inches permitting rail transportation. At Aberdeen, an inexperienced four man crew removed the outer tracks under field conditions in four hours on their first try. An equal amount of time was required to reassemble them onto the vehicle. By the third try, the same team had reduced the time to remove or replace the outer tracks to 2 1/2 hours.

Конечно не могут не радовать уже открытые предтоповое орудие и радиостанция. Однако если вы уже прокачивали альтернативную ПТ Т28 прототип, то орудие и двигатель уже должны быть открыты.

Как и обычно хоровую необходимо открыть и установить сразу для повышения грузоподъемности машины

Так же у нас существенно увеличится скорость поворота и проходимость по разным грунтам, что в свою очередь для ПТ с нашей динамикой крайне важно

Что топовый двигатель, что стоковый не достигают достаточной мощности для достижения более-менее нормальной скорости при нашей массе. Да, топовый двигатель важен, но на этой ПТ игра не строится от динамики, поэтому топовое орудие будет для нас более полезней.

Ну стоковой радиостанции нам будет явно не хватать для игры на наших уровнях, поэтому однозначно сразу устанавливаем топовую, благо она была открыта еще очень давно и по массе достаточно легкая. Ее нам будет вполне достаточно.

Страшное, очень страшное топовое орудие у данной ПТ. Конечно, многие скажут, что БЛ-10 будет лучше, но это не так. Во-первых здесь лучше точность, во-вторых разовый урон не всегда решает. Очень много ситуаций когда важнее нанести 100 – 200 ед. урона быстрее, чем нанести 700 – 800, но ждать 15 секунд … Пробития даже базовыми снарядами у нам более чем достаточно, поэтому проблем с пробитием маусов, Ис-7 и тапков у нас не будет. Урон тоже достаточно неплохой, а при высокой скорострельности мы можем вливать и вливать урон. Что касается предтопового орудия, то нам его недостаточно, но терпите и постепенно прокачивайте топовое, в конце-концов вы получите то, что хотели и игра станет гораздо приятнее.

Crew

Survivability and armour

Despite being a medium tank the T-28 is somewhat lightly armoured for its BR, alongside than the crew is closely packed and surrounded by ammo racks that will be prone to detonation if hit, this leads to it having somewhat weak survivability, however angling the vehicle will increase the effectiveness of the armour and aid in your survivability.

Despite its fair weight the T-28 has decent mobility, the vehicle can easily move around the map to capture points or to attack enemy positions, the vehicle weighs 25.4 tons with an engine producing 500 hp giving the T-28 19.6 hp per ton.

Более новые модификации, начиная примерно с 80-х годов, оснащены трансмиссией с новой конструкцией, например, в ней присутствует муфта свободного хода, а также другие технические особенности.

Современники любят Т-28 не только за функционал, но и за довольно компактные размеры.

• Вес трактора составляет всего 2500 кг., а габариты ДШВ таковы: 4,07 х 2,1 х 2,92 м.
• Клиренс составляет 82,5 см.
• Доступные скорости: от 0,45 км/час до 25 км/час.

Марка двигателя, его параметры

На флагманской модели Т-28 установлен двухцилиндровый четырехтактный двигатель, работающий на дизельном топливе.

• Номинальная мощность двигателя трактора — 28 л.с/20,6 кВт.
• Частота оборотов в минуту 2000.
• Дизельный двигатель запускается бензиновым ПД8.

Особенности двигателя: малый размер магнето, более легкий карбюратор. Присутствует система смазки датчика моточасов.

Также, вследствие модернизации, был увеличен объем бака пускового двигателя, а сам двигатель стал располагаться на большем расстоянии от бака.

КПП трактора Т- 28

КПП многоступенчатая — 6 передач вперед, 2 задние. Скоростной диапазон позволял машине легко маневрировать даже на малой площади почвы.

Устройство кабины

Кабина Т-28: цельнометаллическая, рассчитана на одного человека. Сиденье оператора мягкое. Целостность кабины обеспечивает жесткий каркас. Рабочее место водителя комфортное, на передней панели под рулем располагаются информативные датчики. Механизм управления — рулевой, присутствуют рычаги переключения передач.

Управление трактором Т- 28

Управление Т-28 проводилось с помощью рулевого механизм — рулевая колонка плюс карданный вал. Управление проводилось оператором с места, активацией рычагов КПП, тормоза, педали сцепления. Имеются также рычаги заднего ВОМ, топливный рычаг. Вся работа механизмов контролируется водителей при помощи приборной панели и соответствующих щитков. Из преимуществ управления Т28 можно выделить угол поворота направляющих колес. Даже при движении по мягкой или влажной почве трактор не увязал. С помощью данной машины можно легко проехать по бездорожью.

The Main armament of the T-28 is the 76mm L-10 cannon, this is a rifled gun that can fire 3 types of ammunition: High explosive (HE)(OF-350M), Armour-Piercing High Explosive Ballistic Capped (APHEBC)(BR-350A) & a Shrapnel round (Sh-354T), The most common anti tank would be the APHEBC, however the Shrapnel and HE can be used against lightly or unarmoured vehicles.

Appliqué armour on the T28E — The red shields on the upper flanks, the turret flanks and the rear plate as well as the yellow shields on the lower flanks, the lower front plate and the driver’s hatch are the main armour changes between the T-28 and the T-28E.

Survivability and armour

Don’t try to engage the T28 from the front as it is virtually impossible to penetrate it from the front. Try to knock out its tracks and flank it since its side and rear armour is next to nothing compared to its frontal armour. This tank is also extremely weak to aircraft due to weak armour on top, so another idea may scout out this tank in a light tank or TD, then an aircraft can destroy it from above.

Crew

A crew of four was carried with the driver and gunner in the front hull on the left and right of the cannon respectively. The loader was at the left rear of the fighting compartment and the commander at the right rear behind the gunner. The driver and the commander were each provided with a vision cupola. A ring mount for a .50 caliber machine gun was installed around the commanders cupola. It could be used only with the commander standing in the open hatch and was the only secondary armament on the vehicle, except for the individual crew weapons. The gunner was equipped with a telescope alongside the cannon and a periscopic sight in the hull roof.

The proposed tank was a low silhouette vehicle without a turret. The 105mm gun T5E1 was to be mounted in the front of the hull with a traverse of 10 degrees to the right and left of center and an elevation range of -5 to +20 degrees.

The power package in the T28 (T95) was essentially the same as in the M26 Pershing tank, although the weight of the new vehicle was more than twice that of the latter. To handle the T28 (T95), the 500 horsepower Ford GAF engine and the torqmatic transmission required a final drive gear ratio that reduced the maximum vehicle speed to about eight miles per hour. In fact, the maximum recommended sustained speed was seven miles per hour at 2600 rpm. Due to its extreme weight and low engine power, the T28 (T95) had extremely limited obstacle-crossing ability and could not cross any of the portable bridges available at the time. The great weight of the vehicle also required considerable ingenuity in design to reduce the ground pressure to an acceptable level. This objective was achieved by the use of two sets of tracks on each side. The outer set, along with the four inch thick armor side skirts, could be removed and towed behind the vehicle when operating on a hard surface. Removing the outer tracks also reduced the overall width from 179 1/2 inches to 124 inches permitting rail transportation. At Aberdeen, an inexperienced four man crew removed the outer tracks under field conditions in four hours on their first try. An equal amount of time was required to reassemble them onto the vehicle. By the third try, the same team had reduced the time to remove or replace the outer tracks to 2 1/2 hours.

Ну что же, привыкните к тому, что вы передвижной дот. У нас крайне слабая динамика, поэтому нам необходимо крайне тщательно выбирать направление куда ехать с самого начала. Нам врятли удастся вернуться на базу, не говоря уже о смене фланга. Так же стоит отметить, что у нас достаточно длинный корпус, а это значит, что пробить вас в боковую проекцию не составит труда, да и попасть тоже. Нам стоит опасаться артиллерии т. к. борта и корма картонные и сплэши будут прекрасно проходить. Также из-за маленькой скорости – мы просто не сможем быстро сменить позицию. Самый наш злейший враг – СТ на малых дистанциях, они просто смогут притереться сбоку и надамажить нас. Сбивайте им гусеницы, критуйте двигатель, делайте что хотите, но не подпустите их у себе. Ну по это ПТ пожалуй из особенностей все. Скажу лишь то, что нужно хорошо думать перед каждым действием, поворотом, выстрелом

Игра на этой ПТ строиться с помощью мозгов, а не рук и опыта, что тоже важно.
